Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, you are entitled to $1000 if a debt collector has violated the law or harassed you. You are also entitled to what is called actual damages. Those are damages that occurred as a result of them harassing you by way of example - if you were called at work too much and you lost your job, you would be entitled to actual damages. If you suffered medically, you would be entitled to actual damages. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act also awards you attorneys fees and costs to be paid by the debt collector.
