Are creditors required to notify me before turning a delinquent account over to collections?

Creditors are not required to let you know when they are putting you in collections. Unfortunately, you'll find out soon enough. However, the contract between you and your creditor will dictate how the debt can be collected. The good thing is, is that when a debt collector does get ahold of your debt, the FDCPA will provide you with any protections to prevent the unethical debt collector from harassing or abusing you.
